Zilker Botanical Garden

Take a walk through the trails of Zilker Botanical Garden and you'll be transported away from the hustle and bustle of city life. This lush, green space is located in the City of Austin, Texas on land donated by George W. Littlefield in 1900. Today, more than 8 acres are home to over 10,000 individual species of plants from all over the world. Tour the gardens and you'll find yourself in a different region every time. The Garden serves as an outdoor art museum, showcasing pieces from artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

The Secret Garden

One of Zilker's most unique features is its 20 acres that are walled off to visitors year-round. This area was once home to the family of Roberta Crenshaw, who was a friend and neighbor of Littlefield. In 1991 Mrs. Crenshaw donated this area so that it could be turned into its special place called The Secret Garden. It's been lovingly restored, with winding pathways leading through lush vegetation and trellises covered in climbing roses.

The Zilker Hillside Theater

Every summer, the Garden hosts musical performances under its famous tree canopy. These free shows are known as the Sunset Series and have featured names like Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Sheryl Crow, The Beach Boys, and many more since 1964. The Hillside Theatre has also hosted concerts from other genres of music, with big names like Gloria Estefan and Air Supply gracing the stage.

Restaurants and shops

There are nearby places to grab a bite or pick up some garden-themed gifts after your visit. The Garden is located just next door to Barton Springs Pool, which offers several places for food and drinks as well as the Zilker Brewing Company on their outdoor patio. For those who want something sweeter, Amy's Ice Creams has a location nearby as well. For those with a green thumb, there are several bookstores in the area that offer gardening books and supplies.

How to get to the Zilker Botanical Garden

The Zilker Botanical Garden is located in Austin, Texas at 2220 Barton Springs Rd. You can get to the garden by driving down South Mopac Expressway and taking exit #23 toward US-183 W/Ben White Blvd. Turn left onto Barton Hills Dr., which will take you to the back entrance of the garden.
