The Austin Zoo is home to many interesting animals. The zoo was started in 1900 by Professor W.R Stubbs, who wanted people to learn about the increasing number of endangered species around the world. Today it occupies over 100 acres and houses more than 1000 different birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians from all corners of our beautiful planet Earth.

Open all year

The zoo is open for visitors 365 days a year. Greater Austin visitors can enjoy comfortable walking conditions on more than one mile of shaded trails through the beautiful central Texas landscape, all while enjoying their favorite animals and plants from various parts of the world!

Affectionate baboons can often be seen snacking on delicious treats throughout the day at The Austin Zoo. They are known for their big appetites, so it's important to always be watching your food!

Educational shows

Greater Austin visitors can also enjoy the many educational shows and animal interactions that happen throughout the day at Austin Zoo. You can meet some of our world-famous orangutans in person during an up-close encounter, watch giraffes stretch their long necks, or you can even see some of our amazing birds fly free in this majestic environment.

The Austin Zoo is home to over 500 animals representing more than 200 different species of reptiles and amphibians from all corners of planet Earth. The zoo has become a model for captive breeding programs that allow animal husbandry managers at other zoos the ability to study these species and learn from the experts at The Austin Zoo.

The zoo's animal collection features a wide variety of reptiles, including many rare and endangered animals such as Chinese alligators, yellow-headed day geckos, or Malayan pit vipers. You can also find some amazing amphibians in our rainforest area! Visitors will love the exotic beauty of poison dart frogs, newts, and treefrogs.
